Info
Neither in the first description by Verrill as Heterogorgia gracilis from 1868 nor in the current revision of Odalisca Breedy, Hector M. Guzman from 2020 are details of the water depth given, so that consequently no water temperatures can be stored by us.
The available coral material is the dried lectotype, which is 10cm tall and 6cm wide as an incomplete colony.
There are no photos of a living colony, so the question arises as to whether Psammogorgia gracilis still exists or is extinct.
Drs Breedy and Guzman have dived the site where Psammogorgia gracilis was found, the waters around the Pearl Islands, Panama, East Pacific, very intensively, but no further colonies of the gorgonian have been found.
The shape of the gorgonian is described as tall and flabellate, the branches subparallel and elongated, the colony is red (when dried).
Synonym: Heterogorgia gracilis (Verrill, 1868)
Breedy O, Guzman HM (2020)
A revision of the genus Psammogorgia Verrill, 1868 (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Octocorallia) in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean.
