Mesocentrotus franciscanus (A. Agassiz, 1863)
Mesocentrotus franciscanus lives in shallow waters from the low-tide line to 125 m. The sea urchin's spherical body is completely covered by sharp spines. The colour can be red to dark burgundy, sometimes albino specimens are found.
The Giant Ged sea urchin feeds on kelp, algae and detritus.
Lifespan : 30 years, some specimens to be over 200 years old.
