Abantennarius sanguineus (Gill, 1863)
With its red patterned coloration, Abantennarius sanguineus is perfectly adapted to rocks with calcareous red algae, where it patiently looks out for unimportant small fish and small crustaceans and then lures them in with its illicium and the associated esca and devours them in a flash.
The victims hardly notice that they have been eaten, the process is so fast.
Frogfish should not be kept in a community aquarium, as the additional stock is often eaten, so use a separate tank.
The fish can be fed with live feeder shrimps; there are said to be aquarists who feed guppy offspring.
Synonyms:
Antennarius leopardinus Günther, 1864 · unaccepted (junior synonym)
Antennarius sanguineus Gill, 1863 · unaccepted > superseded combination
Antennarius tagus Heller & Snodgrass, 1903 · unaccepted (junior synonym)
