Info
This gneedlefish was first described in 1821 by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, unfortunately this first description seems to be lost (according to WoRMS not documented). This fact may be a reason for the fact that in the scientific sources different names are given for the needlefish:
According to Fischbase, Platybelone argalus argalus (Lesueur 1821) would be correct.WoRMS and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes give Platybelone argalus as correct name.
Name of the original description: Belona argalus Lesueur, 1821
Platybelone argalus is a fast small fish hunter that very often, typical of many garfish, stays just below the surface of the water, and can snap at lightning speed.
A first quick, superficial glance might indicate a visually quite similar species, the Crocodile Garfish Tylosurus crocodilus (Péron & Lesueur, 1821), which, however, has a much more powerful bill.
