Info
Calcigorgia gracilis is a deep-sea gorgonian known so far endemically only from the depths around the waters of Japan, Pacific side.
The color of the colony in situ is pink.
Etymology:
The species name "gracilis" is from Latin meaning "slender", in reference to the shape of the colony with its slender branches, according to Bayer's manuscript.
Distribution. Pacific side of mainland Japan: off Boso Peninsula, Shio Misaki at 1188-1497 m.
Initial cursory examination identified this specimen as Calcigorgia beringi, based on its slender colonial form, which contrasts with the coarser appearance of Calcigorgia spiculifera, and its habitat in deep waters.
However, the growth habit is even more filigree and the branches are more slender and flexible than Calcigorgia beringi.
