Adult Silverling Gerres oblongus fish occur on shallow, soft bottoms near coral reefs.
The slender silverside moves to certain sandy areas near the outer edge of the reef to spawn in the late afternoon under a full moon.
Feeds on small benthic organisms that live on sandy bottoms.
The body of Gerres oblongus appears compressed, relatively long and slender.
The second dorsal fin spine is slightly elongated but not filiform, pectoral fins are long and extend to the anal fin base.
The caudal fin is also long and deeply forked.

The body is bluish-silver dorsally, shiny-silver ventrally, often with irregular dark longitudinal stripes in juveniles, the anal and pelvic fins are sometimes yellowish.
