Info
Pomacentrus tripunctatus is a brownish damselfish with darker scale margins and a large dark spot on the upper caudal fin peduncle.
Adult damselfish have a black spot on the upper caudal fin rather than a blue spot as in Pomacentrus grammorhynchus, which also has an orange caudal fin.
Juvenile perches are paler and have an ocellus on the upper caudal peduncle and an additional large ocellus on the back of the dorsal fin, as well as iridescent blue lines on the head and back.
Pomacentrus tripunctatus is a solitary shallow water species that lives in shallow coral reefs in holes of small rocks on sandy bottoms with coral rubble.
P. tripunctatus is found in shallow bays and muddy coastal reefs and other "dead" areas.
In 2022 the species was reported for the first time from the Persian Gulf (Kish Island, Iran).
The maximum length in the Persian Gulf was 7 cm and the fish lives here at depths of 2 to 6 m (on Kish Island, Iran).
