The black coral Dendropathes bacotaylorae was found in Twin Banks, these unnamed twin banks are located between the Necker and Nihoa Islands (Northwestern Hawaiiian Islands) and each encompass about 500 square kilometers of submerged coral reef habitat.
Here, the coral was discovered at a depth of 408 meters by underwater vehicle and a sample was collected for identification.
The coral is branched and distinctly pinnate, and the tentacles are short and thick.
