Haemulon flaviguttatum is a benthic, demersal species occurs in coastal waters and forms shoals over rocky and sandy substrates.
The Cortez grunt is also found on deep rocky walls and reefs and in massive corals and exposed shallow rocky reefs in the Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama
Juvenile grunts can be found near estuaries in Mexico.
Since the species is also found in the Gulf of California / Baja California, whose other name is "Sea of Cortez", this grunt species has been called "Cortez grunt" in English.
With a size of over 40cm and the fact that the species forms large schools and shoals, it should also remain in the sea.
