Info
Special thanks for the first photo of Notostichopus ludwigi to John Turnbull, Marine Explorer, Australia.
Notostichopus ludwigi is a relatively rare species, most commonly found in western Australia at the edge of seagrass beds.
Coloration and markings vary little between locations. The upper body has a bone-colored ground covered by small brown spots, with three or four darker brown stripes in the middle of the body.
The lower body also has brown spots, but in smaller numbers and on a cream-colored ground. There are several short, blunt, and very dark spines on the upper edge of the body.
Sea cucumbers / sea rollers are the vacuum cleaners of the seas, keeping the bottoms clean and removing detritus by their work.
Synonym: Stichopus ludwigi Erwe, 1913
