Info
The Puerto Rico Trench is a deep-sea channel up to 9219 meters deep and 800 kilometers long in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean, and thus the deepest part of the Atlantic and Caribbean Seas.
Using a deep-sea capable submersible, a new marine isopod was discovered, collected, and identified in the abyssal and hadal of the Puerto Rico Trench, in the range of approximately 4,552 - 8,338 meters.
Nothing is known biologically about the isopod to date.
Etymology:
The species name "brandtae" was named in honor of Angelika Brandt, the doctoral mother of three of the authors, for her dedication and achievements in deep-sea isopod research and in gratitude to her as a trailblazer for the authors on their journey into deep-sea science.
