Info

Navanax gemmatus (Mörch, 1863)

Navanax is a genus in the family Aglajidae. There are currently only 5 described species. Members of the genus feed predatorily on other snails, often other snails.

Navanax gemmatus is often found under rocks or crawling on rocks in shallow waters up to a depth of 10m, rarely on sand. The head shield snail feeds predatorily on other “opisthobranchs”. The snail was also observed eating the sapsucker snail Elysia crispata during research in nature, with which it was temporarily left on a tray.

When disturbed, Navanax gemmatus releases a reddish-yellow substance.
