Info
Mycetomorpha abyssalis is a parasitic deep-sea barnacle that was discovered on its host, the shrimp Sclerocrangon zenkevitchi.
This host shrimp belongs to the family Crangonidae and was landed on September 29, 2023 from a depth between 3893 - 3890 meters using a trawl net.
Mycetomorpha abyssalis was attached to pleoni 1, the first abdominal segment, just after the carapace.
Etymology:
The species name "abyssalis" refers to the marine zone Abyssal and means a depth range between 1000 - 7000 meters deep.
Mycetomorpha abyssalis is the third described species of the genus, Mycetomorpha, the other two species being Mycetomorpha vancouverensis Potts, 1912 and Mycetomorpha albatrossi Høeg & Rybakov, 1996.
