Info

4lat is a schooling fish that is of great value in the food chain, being consumed by various other animals such as fish, e.g. the ray Okamejei kenojei and the gurnard Chelidonichthys spinosus.
Seabirds also benefit from the shoaling, especially when the fish gather in shoals in shallow water zones, where they provide the birds with a real feast.
Crustaceans such as crabs and shrimps also feed on §lat, as does the amphipod Parathemisto japonica.

In addition, Ammodytes personatus is commercially fished for human consumption, and in Japan the Pacific sandeel is considered a delicacy.

Sports anglers use sand eels as bait to catch larger fish.

Synonym: Ammodytes tobianus personatus Girard, 1856
