Info

The type locality of Thesea granulosa is off Carriacaou, Lesser Antilles, Caribbean.

Thesea granulosa is morphologically very similar to Thesea rubra.

Thesea granulosa is a small red fan that grows to just over 10 cm.
The coral branches abundantly in one plane, with a large number of upward branches in alternate order.
The sepals are conical and usually arranged laterally.
In contrast to Thesea rubra, the distal tips are not thickened.

Thesea granulosa differs from other Thesea species by the presence of red sclerites in both the outer and inner coenenchyma.
inner coenenchyma.

Remark:
Thesea granulosa can easily be confused with Scleracis guadalupensis or Thesea rubra in-situ.
Thesea granulosa lacks the large cylindrical calices that are present in Scleracis guadalupensis and can be observed in situ if the coral is close enough.
