Plectranthias yamakawai is a flag perch that is still largely unknown and about which there is only scant information, which is probably due to its deep distribution.
The body of the flag perch is reddish-yellow above and whitish below.
A large reddish spot the size of the eye socket is located below the lateral line on both sides of the body, the vertical fins are reddish-yellow, the pectoral fins reddish and the pelvic fins whitish.
With the exception of the snout, the head of the perch is thickly scaled, the cheeks are covered with 7 rows of scales.
Plectranthias yamakawai has a large and elongated mouth; its lower jaws are slightly protruding when the mouth is closed.
The upper jaw reaches below the rear edge of the pupil.
Etymology
The name of the species is dedicated to Mr. Takeshi Yamakawa, who was the first to collect and describe this species under the name Plectranthias anthioides.
