This grouper is found on rock walls, rocky reef slopes, underwater lava ridges, and other well-structured vertical rock formations.

Color: Olive to dark brown with darker and sometimes purple spots and short, broad stripes on the middle of the side.
Another color variation is solid brown, but completely yellow specimens also occur.

Mycteroperca olfax is heavily targeted by commercial fisheries and the grouper is now considered a highly endangered species, see the status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
