Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Trachidermus fasciatus are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Trachidermus fasciatus, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Trachidermus fasciatus, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

The bullhead is an all-rounder, living in fresh water, brackish water, and sea water, tolerating a salinity of almost 0 to about 30 psu and a water temperature range of 4° to 27° Celsius, with egg laying occurring in cold water at 4°-5° Celsius.

The carnivorous bullhead is a carnivorous, catadromous fish that feeds on a variety of different copepods in its juvenile phase, see https://www.fishbase.se/TrophicEco/FoodItemsList.php?vstockcode=41163&genus=Trachidermus&species=fasciatus
Since adult animals also eat fish and shrimp, enthusiasts should keep the animal in a pure fish aquarium, or better still, admire it in public display aquariums or in nature.

Trachidermus fasciatus has three vertical, dark brown bands on its upper body and/or narrow, brown cross bands on its pectoral, dorsal, anal, and caudal fins.

Synonym: Trachydermus fasciatus Heckel, 1837 · unaccepted (misspelling)
