Info
Siphonaria sipho belongs to the family Siphonariidae, the so-called false cup snails. Members of this family have a lateral respiratory pore on their shell and take in atmospheric oxygen through the mantle cavity, which functions as a lung.
False cup snails are not related to true cup snails. A simple visual distinguishing feature is the lateral slit in false cup snails for the respiratory pore (air-breathing snails)
Siphonaria sipho is commonly found in sheltered locations such as depressions and crevices in the upper and middle coastal zones, on bare, exposed rocks.
Siphonaria sipho varies in color; the shell color ranges from dark to light. Various illustrations can be seen on page 30 of the article “Hidden in plain sight: Systematic review of Indo-West Pacific Siphonariidae uncovers extensive cryptic diversity based on comparative morphology and mitochondrial phylogenetics (Mollusca, Gastropoda).”
