Solenostomus paradoxus, Pallas, 1770
Solenostomus paradoxus, lives in the Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the coast of East Africa to Australia, New Caledonia, the Fiji Islands and Tonga, as well as as as far as Japan.
Solenostomus species live on coastal reefs, mostly among algae, gorgonians and near feather stars. There they are very well camouflaged. The ornamental ghost pipefish is monogamous and can be found in pairs or singly.
They feed on floating shrimps (mysis) and other small zooplankton.
Due to their sensitivity to transportation and poor food intake, keeping them in aquaria seems to be very, very difficult or even impossible.
Today (2005) we are not aware of any successes in keeping them in aquaria.
Synonyms:
Fistularia paradoxa Pallas, 1770
Solenostomatichthys paradoxus (Pallas, 1770)
