These tunicates live in reef-bound colonies in water depths of up to 40 meters and are connected by stolons.
The Mediterranean alone is home to around 25 species of sea squirts.
Sea squirts are harmless plankton filter feeders or whirlpools and, as sessile creatures, are on the menu of many marine animals, such as nudibranchs.
Sea squirts can only exist permanently in the marine aquarium if sufficient and regular plankton feeding is provided and there are no known predators in the tank.
