You have to look very closely to recognize the small amphipod. The amphipod is found from Scandinavia to the Bay of Biscay and is not well suited to conventional temperatures in the marine aquarium, except as a food animal.
In the sea, the amphipod has an important function as a protein supplier within the food chain for larger carnivores. It can be found in water depths of up to 200 meters, in shallow zones regularly among Laminaria algae.
The color of the amphipod is very variable, whitish or yellowish with a transverse, reddish-brown to pinkish, stripe pattern.
Synonym: Panoploea obesa (Rathke, 1843)
