(Pourtalès, 1869)
Analcidometra armata is the smallest starfish in the Caribbean, it has 10 red and white ringed arms that can grow to 10cm long when stretched out.
The hairy starfish is found in coral reefs to a water depth of about 40 meters and is able to actively leave its location by swimming.
Hairy starfish can maintain their location for many years, provided that the current supplies the animal with sufficient plankton.
Hairy starfish should not be touched in the sea or placed around for photographic purposes, as such disturbance would only cause the animal unnecessary stress and may cause it to leave an otherwise.
Synonyms:
Analcidometra caribbea (AH Clark, 1908)
Antedon armata Pourtalès, 1869
Oligometra caribbea AH Clark, 1908
