The Panamic dartfish is endemic to the Eastern Pacific, and is found from the tip of Baja California and the Gulf of California to Colombia.

Ptereleotris carinata is relatively common throughout its range, it inhabits sandy-rubble substrates on reef edges to depths of 12 to 25 meters.
