Endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the South Province of the main island of New Caledonia (Grande Terre), and to rivers with ultramafic beds.
Protogobius attiti rrefers areas with gravel and overhanging vegetation in slower places of swift, clear streams; rocks and gravel usually coated with detritus. Dives into the substrate when threatened, with its eyes, mouth and first dorsal fin above the gravel. Feeds mainly on small crustaceans, especially transparent shrimp which are abundant.

Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Gobioidei (Suborder) > Rhyacichthyidae (Family) > Protogobius (Genus)
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
