Die Weichkoralle Sclerophytum higai wurde bereits 2002, von Prof. Dr. Yehuda Benayahu aus Israel, in den Gewässern um die Ryūkyū-Inseln, Japan, entdeckt und erstbeschrieben.
Diese Weichkoralle wurde zu Ehren von Professor Tatsuo Higa, University of the Ryukyu, Japan nach ihm benannt.

Die Weichkoralle bildet eine flache, dünne, krustenförmige Struktur aus und ist mit Erhöhungen versehen, auf der Oberfläche der Koralle befinden sich viele außenskelettartige Hartteile (Sklerite).

Aquaristische Haltungserfahrungen zu dieser Weichkoralle fehlen bislang.
