Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Sclerophytum tessieri are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Sclerophytum tessieri, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Sclerophytum tessieri, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Sclerophytum tessieri was first described in 2012 as Sinularia tessieri Benayahu & van Ofwegen, 2012, and later assigned to the soft coral genus Sclerophytum. Colonies of the soft coral originate from Pointe au Sel and Saint-Leu on the west coast of La Réunion in the western Indian Ocean.
Living colonies of the soft coral are light grey in color, the expanded polyps are light beige.

So far, Sclerophytum tessieri is only known from the type locality La Réunion.

Etymology. - The species is named after Dr. Emmanuel Tessier, manager of the Association Parc marin de La Réunion, in recognition of his initiative to carry out the octocoral
study on La Réunion and his support during and after the field work.

Synonym: Sinularia tessieri Benayahu & van Ofwegen, 2012
