Info
Hemicorallium regale lives around the Pacific waters around Hawaiii to offshore seamounts a few miles west of the California coast (outer edge of the western boundary of the Bay), but has also been found around the Line Islands (Central Polynesian Sporades).
The entire colony of Hemicorallium regale looks pinkish - reddish, it has been given the colloquial name "red coral" and "garnet" coral" (pomegranate color with various shades of solid pink)
The average height of this deep water coral is 15 cm, a stem diameter of 6 mm and a weight of 100 grams.
In earlier years, the coral was commercially "harvested" for its color to make jewelry, such as beads for necklaces.
Harvesting ceased in the 1980s due to the high cost of cultivation.
Synonym: Corallium regale Bayer, 1956
