Pempheris poeyi inhabits holes and crevices in eroded limestone shores.

The shortfin hatchetfish is nocturnal and lives during the day in shoals in caves, under rocky outcrops or between densely branched corals.

This species is known for not having a gas bladder.

Color:
Pempheris poeyi is pale yellow-brown, darker on top, silvery on the belly, there is a clearly visible dark band along the base of the anal fin, an indistinct dark inner stripe runs along the middle of the body.
