Pempheris sarayu lives endemically in the waters of Kovalam, Kerala, India, it is also a rather rarely observed species, of which there are only a few photos.

The copper-colored hatchetfish has relatively large eyes and is most closely related to Pempheris rhomboidea, Compared to Pempheris rhomboidea, Pempheris sarayu is mainly copper-colored, while Pempheris rhomboidea is bronze-colored.

Etymology:
The species epithet “sarayu” is chosen in honor of the second author's wife.
