Very little is known about this deep-water species, but we assume that the reason for this lies in its deep-water distribution.

Allen and Erdmann 2012, Fraser and Prokofiev 2016, Fraser et al. 2022 reported that the cardinalfish luminesces in the dark.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find any recent reports of a living or freshly landed cardinalfish, so the color of living animals remains unknown.

Etymology.
The specific name “gularis” is an adaptation of the Latin word “gula,” which means throat or esophagus and is used in reference to the location of the anus, which is close to the chest area.
